Hombre de Fuego is Huajatolla Heritage Foundation's civic ritual of release and renewal. Each September, following Mountain Mining Day, neighbors gather at the Huerfano Community Center to share Community Stew made from donated garden produce, enjoy mariachi and El Fandango, and participate in a guided conversation with Molina Speaks. Before dusk, participants tuck written intentions into a seven-foot willow-and-sage effigy; when it’s lit, we honor our ancestors, let go of burdens, and send our shared hopes into the night—committing to return stronger for one another.
Free and open to the public.
Doors open at 4:30 and the effigy will burn around dusk.
Food, mariachi music, El Fandango and more!
Our ancestors had the vision and strength to root their lives in Huerfano County, raising families and thriving against hardship. As Colorado’s 150th anniversary approaches, we continue this work—bringing forward the stories of families not yet represented. Their voices will join this living history. We invite you to stand with us in carrying their legacy forward. Be part of this effort, we welcome you to join us in honoring those who came before by sharing your history and your story.
What began in 2022 with 33 families now grows with 43 more. These first-generation Hispano families of Huerfano County carry the spirit of resilience—living testaments to the courage, endurance, and hope that turned a rugged frontier into a place called home.
